REPORT: WORKSHOP B4

The
Peace and Human Rights Workshop noted with deep concern the high levels of
violence and human rights abuses in today’s world, ranging from domestic,
community and structural violence to the continuing threat of nuclear war.
Noting
also that ICAE and the Peace and Human Rights Network, in particular, needs to
contribute to a culture of peace and the UN Decade for a Culture of Peace and
Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010)
The
workshop recommended that ICAE and the Peace and Human Rights Network in
particular:
1.
Encourage
that all adult education programs and curricula include education in peace,
human rights and conflict resolution
2.
Monitor
and speak out on all education materials, print and visual, that promote
prejudice, biases and historical lies
3.
Support,
endorse and popularize existing initiatives with specific reference to the Non-Violent
Peace force and Peace Centers such as those of the Umtapo Center in South
Africa
4.
Support
and engage in educational efforts on the impact of weapons, ranging from small
arms to nuclear weaponry, on the prevalence of violence in the world
5.
Conduct
action-research on the relationship between structural violence, militarism,
and economic globalization
6.
Engage in
networking and information dissemination through:

Production of a Peace and Human Rights Newsletter
·
Facilitation of exchange programs to experience
best practices in peace, human rights, conflict resolution
·
Publication of an ongoing sourcebook on Peace and
Conflict Resolution activities worldwide
·
Establishment of linkages with relevant global
institutions and campaigns such as the Hague Appeal for Peace and Abolition
2000
7.
Review
existing research studies and practices of successful peace building efforts in
order to promote sustainable peace
