ICAE VP in Arab Region
Named Syrian Minister

Ms Ghada Al-Jabi, the Vice President of ICAE for the Arab Region was recently appointed as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Government of Syria.

Ms Al-Jabi had served her government before as the Director of the Illiteracy Elimination Division. She has been honoured by both UNESCO and the ICAE for her contributions to women's education, literacy and adult education.

Ms Al-Jabi is also the chairperson of the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education.

The ICAE is proud of Ms Al-Jabi and her work.

ASPBAE Puts Emphasis on Policy Advocacy on Adult and Lifelong Learning
Mandated to focus its work towards a greater emphasis in policy advocacy on adult and lifelong learning, ASPBAE has identified programmes on three core strategies: 1) policy advocacy on transformative adult learning; 2) strengthening strategic partnerships for advocacy; and 3) leadership and institutional capacity-building for transformative adult learning.

Together with ICAE, it has initiated the formation of a Commonwealth network on adult education. It firmly believes that without a strong global voice on adult education, adult education issues will remain marginal in the global education debates. ASPBAE has a clear stake therefore in strengthening a global platform and formation that will ensure this. The CONFINTEA V+6 review process in 2003 offers an opportunity to galvanise a global AE front which ASPBAE and ICAE should fully maximize.

ASPBAE was selected as a member of the Coordination Group of the UNESCO collective consultation of NGOs on EFA (NGO CC/EFA). Its selection as Asia-Pacific focal point in this body has more directly positioned ASPBAE as a regional and international player in the Education for All (EFA) follow-up processes, particularly on the issues of Adult Literacy and Women's Education.

Together with ICAE and NGO CC/EFA, ASPBAE also works with the Global Campaign on Education (GCE) on policy advocacy on transformative adult learning.

Note: ASPBAE is a regional member of ICAE.
