2.- Open Letter to Mr Robert Mugabe
FEMNET
Dear Colleagues, Greetings from African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) FEMNET as a pan African women organisation working to promote and protect the rights of women and children in Africa is extremely concerned with the escalating human rights violations in Zimbabwe . We have therefore, decided to write an open letter to Mr. Robert Mugabe as way of condemning him for the violations. The open letter is part of the Pan-African Campaign for Solidarity with Zimbabwean people. Attached is the open letter to President Robert Mugabe. We kindly request you to circulate it widely to all your contacts. With thanks.

9th July, 2008 The Office of the President Cause Way Harare Zimbabwe
Your Excellency,
RE: WE STAND UP FOR DEMOCRACY IN ZIMBABWE
The African Women Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), a Pan- African Network working for the promotion and protection of the rights of women and children in the Africa Region is greatly disturbed by the unfolding events in this great African country Zimbabwe.
We note with concern the continued suffering of women and children in this country who have been victimized for no apparent reason or cause. Ironically their alleged crime is that they or their male relatives have participated in the democratic process of their country and expressed their choice of leadership for their country!!! The sham runoff election for presidency held on the 27th of June was marred with pre- and post election violence which has led to untold suffering for the people of Zimbabwe, loss of life (for example over 220 people linked with the opposition have died since March 2008), destruction of property and forced displacement of people majority of whom are women and children and in the process many have become victims of sexual abuse and other forms of violations of their body integrity.
Mr. Mugabe, you have a great history as one of the freedom fighters of Zimbabwe and you will always be acknowledged and remembered for the great contribution and sacrifice you personally made to bring freedom to all the people of Zimbabwe. We acknowledge the complexity of the situation in Zimbabwe. However, we believe that your continued unlawful stay in power as the President of Zimbabwe is not benefiting the majority of men and women of your country. Women and children of comrades in the opposition have been deliberately attacked, many have been forced out of their homes and fled the country, and others are currently in safe custody with embassies of foreign countries that still exist in your country. This is a real shame and a total mockery of democracy. We strongly believe that your autocratic leadership is a total disgrace to the people of Zimbabwe and the whole of Africa.
FEMNET joins the Presidents of Africa countries and other civil society organizations in Africa to condemn in the strongest terms the undemocratic elections that took place in Zimbabwe on the 27th of June 2008. Your political conduct is unacceptable and shameful to the entire continent of Africa.
We therefore call upon you Mr. Mugabe to do the following:
Note that in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe especially the women and children of this great country, the women of Africa through FEMNET:
Democracy shall prevail.
Yours faithfully,
Norah Matovu Winyi ED FEMNET On behalf of the women’ rights movement in Africa
3.- Stories of Possible Worlds Telling the stories of social struggle and change What are the practices, the experiences and struggles for social change that you have managed to achieve or are in the process of achieving? What has characterized or characterizes these experiences? What methods were used, if any? What can these stories teach to us? How can they modify our social and political processes? The UPMS, Popular University of Social Movements, and Upter, Popular University of Rome, invite all those who work for social change in the field of human rights and democracy to recount their experiences, “in order to identify and enhance the new social processes and act as a sounding board.” Stories sharing in the struggle for the affirmation of human rights and democracy, according to principles of the World Social Forum. International Scientific Committee and Work Groups Work Groups (in the different geographical areas or bio-regions) consisting of scholars and activists from UPMS (Università Popolare dei Movimenti Sociali), from various spheres of discipline, geography and action; each group is co-ordinated by a member of the scientific committee. The different work groups deal with: · diffusion of the award in their respective areas of reference; · the international work groups examine the works submitted and analyze them on the basis of criteria also useful for inserting the stories and studies in the digital archive; · activities in support of the practices of self-narration, through the sharing of methodologies and tools; · each work group will then select - through discussions within the group - one of the works submitted for each category as a particularly significant contribution from the standpoint of "best practices". The work groups are located in: Latin America (two groups: Columbia and Brazil); Arfrica(Senegal); Asia (India); Europe (Italy). The work group in Rome also carries out secretarial and general coordination tasks, in concert with the coordinators of the work groups and the scientific committee. True stories which speak of the campaigns and struggles in the various spheres to which different movements and groups of citizens are devoting their time: employment, fair trade, housing, minorities, inter-culture, religious dialogue, political dialogue, the environment, health, education, justice, peace, public services, participation ... Stories which have already come to an end or which are still going on; stories with a successful outcome or which have not had the hoped-for ending, including those which are still in part in the conceptual stages and have not been wholly achieved. A workshop - project for Stories of Social Struggle and Change What stories… The works taking part in the Award can be divided into two areas: "Narrations" "Studies and Research". They can be both directly by the protagonists of the struggles themselves or by others; both by individual author, work groups or communities. “Narrations” Works belonging to hr "Narration" category may be given expression in different "languages" for must effective communication: Autobiographical and biographical writings Photonarrations Videonarrations Audionarrations Other languages. “Studies and Research” The "Studies and Research " section has been included in the Award for works dealing - for example - with analyses of social struggles and events which go back in time, with research that links the past with the present (in a historical, sociological, anthropological - or, better yet, interdisciplinary - approach) or works which seek to connect several experiences from a comparative perspective, etc. However, it is possible to use different narrative means here as well (text, photos, video, audio) in order to render the research work more expressive and communicative. ...................... Both for the "Narratives" and the "Studies and Research" section, it will be possible to submit works produced specifically for the Award as well as works realized previously (including publications or works which have taken part in festivals, reviews, etc.) The “Stories of Possible Worlds" Award is a way of stimulating the telling of experiences of social struggle and change in order to encourage reflection and share knowledge about them. The true purpose of this project consists in building a Digital Archive, in which experiences and know-how can be exchanged as a contribution to the knowledge and organization of alternative practices. It is very important, therefor, that the stories include some reflection on the methods with which the experiences of social change have been realized. These may be structured or spontaneous , new or already existing methods.... This will make it possible to share the experiences on the methodological plane as well. Each story – in this project - will become part of a process of common effort in a sort of "alliance of the stories". It will be a reciprocal learning experience which aims to be the fundamental driving force of this workshop-project.
