1.-
OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF ADULT LEARNERS WEEK

PRESS RELEASE
PR33/05
18th MAY 2005

Ed Melia
Ed.Melia@niace.org.uk

The largest festival of learning in the UK, Adult Learners Week, will be officially launched next Monday 23rd May 2005, with a celebration of adult learners at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, London.
Learners from across the country will celebrate their remarkable achievements, including families and groups who have learned and worked together to improve their own lives and the lives of others.
The Rt Hon. Ruth Kelly MP, Secretary of State for Education and Skills will give a keynote speech and present the National Senior Learner of the Year Award to Ted Rudge from Shirley in the
West Midlands. Actor and TV Presenter Tony Robinson will also address the audience and present the Family Learning Awards to the Aktos family from Leamington Spa, and Linda and Chris Moller from Bristol.
Ruth Kelly said, Over recent years, Adult Learners Week has become the single biggest event in the adult learning calendar, giving tens of thousands of people the opportunity to sample and sign up for learning that will improve their lives, transform their careers and help them to enjoy the many benefits that learning brings.
She continued, It also gives us the opportunity to recognise and reward outstanding individual success in learning, often achieved in the face of great adversity.  I have great respect and admiration for the learners, their tutors and advisers, as well as for the families and friends who have encouraged them in their learning choices and supported them along the way.  We celebrate all their achievements during Adult Learners Week and hold them up as an example and an inspiration to others.
She concluded, For our part, the Government has set the strategy in our March White Paper, Skills - Getting on in business, getting on at work but ultimately it is the learners, tutors, trainers and the many partner organisations who share our vision and belief in the transformative power of learning who will make it a success.
Tony Robinson said, Im very excited about coming to Adult Learners Week 2005 and it will be great to meet the winners who are such an inspiration to others. This year Im helping Directgov launch its adult learning website,
www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning, which is a fantastic new online resource for information on all aspects of adult learning.

He ended,
Ill also be presenting the Family Learners of the Year award. I know from personal experience that adult education is a great way to transform your life, open doors to new career opportunities and boost your self-esteem. Im simply delighted to be part of the UKs biggest celebration of adult learning.

2.- GCAP

FROM ROBERTO BISSIO

Dear friends,

The Informal Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly with non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector will be held on 23 and 24 June 2005 at UN Headquarters in New York. This event is a lead-up event to the Millennium Summit+5, to be held 14-16 September 2005 in New York
Please find attached (1) an informational note on Format of the Hearings and opportunities for Participation; and (2) the Nomination Form for those wishing to participate in the Hearings as a speaker or active participant.
These hearings are the main (and practically only) opportunity so far for NGOs to have a say inside the UN on the negotiation process towards the Second Millennium Summit next September.
*          In accordance with GA Resolution A/Res/59/291, themes of the Hearings will be based on the Secretary-General's report "In Larger Freedom:
Towards Development, Security and Human Rights For All" and the clusters defined therein (Development, Security, Human Rights, UN Reform).  The report can be found in all UN official languages in the UN website:
http://www.un.org
*          It is expected that the President of the General Assembly will invite about 200 active participants from NGO/CS/PS, including 25 to 30 speakers, to make a substantial contribution to the Hearings. Selection will be based on the following criteria: (1) Broad substantive expertise and/or experience in one or more of the four sections of the "In Larger Freedom" and cross-cutting themes; (2) Representation of organizations/network(s) with a broad constituency, of a public interest nature, and operating at the local, national or international level; (3) Gender, geographic and sectoral balance, with attention paid to racial, ethnic, intergenerational and religious diversity; and (4) Significant representation from the Global South, indigenous peoples and other under-represented regions or groups.
*          Groups nominating participants will need to send their nomination form(s) by
TUESDAY, 24 MAY 2005 to gahearings@un.org. Those who cannot e-mail their form should send via fax to NGLS: +1 212-963-8712.
*          NGO representatives with ECOSOC consultative status or DPI affiliation will be able to participate in the Hearings as observing attendees, by virtue of that status. NGO/CS/PS representatives without ECOSOC consultative status or DPI affiliation may be able to participate in the Hearings as observing attendees via accreditation through members in their network who have ECOSOC consultative status or DPI affiliation.
*          For those wishing to participate as observers, the registration deadline is
FRIDAY, 03 JUNE 2005. Information on how to register is forthcoming.

Due to the international recognition that GCAP has already gained, it is widely understood
that GCAP may have between five and ten speakers and between 30-50 participants in the
hearings.
In order for GCAP to be able to nominate people it is necessary for the attached form to be filled and sent before the end of the day of tommorrow, Thursday, May 19. We are aware that this is a short notice and we are sorry about this, but the form to be filled in and the explanatory document have only reached us at the end of the day (Wednesday here in Montevideo, midnight in Europe and early morning of Thursday in Asia). In fact, due to this delay the time to receive the applications by the UN was postponed until Tuesday, yet we do not have as GCAP an alternative way to decide on our recommendations if we do not receive the applications earlier.
From the applications that we do receive, a team of people comprised by the two GCAP representatives in the task force (Wahu Kaara and Alejandra Scampini), the GCAP coordinator in NY (Rosa Lizarde) and the co- chairs of the Lobby and Policy Group (Christianne Oberkamp and myself) will select on the Friday afternoon the list of speakers and participants that GCAP will propose. Please note that 1) there is no garantee that the people included in the GCAP list will end up being chosen, since the decision will be ulitimately made by the UN, and 2) that the GCAP is only one of the channels for nominations to reach the UN: people can be suggested by other members of the task force as part of their own lists and they can also be nominated directly (up to May 24) by any accredited NGO. Yet, it is very likely that people nominated by GCAP (or any other broad and identifiable constituency) have greater chances to be selected.
It was therefore decided in today's conference call of the chairs of GCAP working groups to encourage GCAP members to submit the applications. Please send the forms to Rosa Lizarde ( rosaencasa@aol.com  ) and to me ( rbissio@item.org.uy  ) in order for candidacies to be able to be discussed by the GCAP group explained above. Those nominations endorsed as GCAP nominations by the process described above will then be fed to the official UN e-mail for nominations.
Participants that do not belong to a UN accredited organization CAN be nominated via GCAP. Please explain clearly which organization(s) are endorsing the nominee (for example his or her own organization and a national coalition or international network). In promoting the sending in of proposals, please pay special attention to the nomination of "speakers".
Thanks,
Roberto Bissio

3.- MAKE POVERTY HISTORY -
EDINBURG - SATURDAY 2ND JULY

We would like to share with you information that is available in the following website:
http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/edinburgh/  so as to promote the exchange of inputs about this important event where all of us are involved. We would like to thank Jane Thompson for this information.
Cecilia Fernandez
GEO-ICAE

Make Poverty History - Edinburg - Saturday 2nd July
As the leaders of the world's richest countries gather in Scotland for the G8 summit, join tens of thousands of others in Edinburgh on 2nd July demanding trade justice, debt cancellation, and more and better aid for the world's poorest countries

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is the big campaign for 2005.
The campaign has been launched because over 420 charities, church groups and other organisations (plus a sprinkling of trusty celebs), know that this is the year that world poverty can truly be tackled head on.
Several years ago, global leaders agreed eight goals which would halve world poverty by 2015. All it needed was cash, cooperation and commitment. Sadly rich governments have been lacking in all three. Progress in meeting the goals is slow and the result is that the gap between rich and poor countries is wider than ever. A recent report for the United Nations confirmed that it is still possible to meet the goals if rich countries will get serious about helping poorer nations.
MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is about turning up the pressure on world leaders to change this situation. We are demanding trade justice, debt cancellation and more and better aid.

When and where?
EDINBURGH, JULY 2nd is the place to be.
Your participation at the demonstration in Edinburgh will be a clear sign that you care about global poverty and injustice. The more people attend the campaign the harder it is for the G8 to ignore the pledge for a better world. They will have to do something about it.
The Rally will be followed by a huge party; featuring guest speakers, celebrities, and live music. You do workshops on campaigning throughout the year and get involved in many different ways, including sending your messages to the G8!

Trade Debt Aid
The gap between the worlds's rich and poor has never been wider.
Malnutrition, AIDS, conflict and illiteracy are a daily reality for millions.
But it isn't chance or bad luck that keeps people trapped in bitter, unrelenting poverty. It's man-made factors like a glaringly unjust global trade system, a debt burden so great that it suffocates any chance of recovery and insufficient and ineffective aid.

Those with power
back in 2001 the governments of the eight wealthiest nations on the planet said that they were going to do something about it - in what was seen as a breakthrough, they promised to halve world poverty by 2015.
Four years later the world is failing dismally to reach those targets.

One last chance
This year offers a truly exceptional set of opportunities for the
UK to take a lead internationally and say that enough is enough.
With the
UK hosting the G8 gathering of powerful world leaders in July as well as holding the presidency of the European Union (EU) for the second half of the year, our Government and particularly Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, will be influential players on the world stage - we must make sure they play their part.
They have the power and we can make them use it.

Why should I come?
We want as many campaigners and members of the public as possible to show the Prime Minister
and his fellow G8 leaders that the
UK public cares enough about global poverty and injustice to come in person to Edinburgh, just as Jubilee 2000 did at the Birmingham G8 in 1998- but on an even greater scale.

What can you do
Send an email to Tony Blair to challenge him to Make Poverty History. Make your voice heard!

Spread the word! Tell your friends and get them involved too!

Download the mobilisation pack
The day's events will start from
11am, and will include:
Rallies with international speakers, celebrity supporters and music.
The creation of a giant human white band around Edinburgh city centre, with staggered starts at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm - so no need to rush!
       Entertainment, 'market stalls' and activities.
An opportunity for you to send your messages directly to the G8 meeting in Gleneagles.
The event will be a family friendly, safe and fun day - so bring as many people as you can!
Additional new information will be released on this site as soon as it becomes available.
